The idea of the "International
Interfaith Investment Group" was
first suggested at a meeting in Katmandu of representatives of
many faith traditions, when a challenge was issued to faith investors
around the world to align their financial investments with their
religious and ethical beliefs.
To that end, an interim steering committee was created
comprised of represenatives of the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic,
Jain,
Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Zoroastrian faiths. Seeking a way for
each faith to assess its portfolios with "due regard to the faith's
beliefs, values, the envirnoment and human rights so that all life
on Earth can benefit," the group created the term "faith-consistent
investment" as a form of socially responsible investment
(SRI).
An advisory group of investors from secular groups,
including philanthropies,
who found their values and ethics aligned with those of 3iG, became
involved. Major banks such as Citigroup, Rabobank from the Netherlands,
the World Bank, as well as agencies such as Innovest, WWF International,
and economic think-tank bodies such as Medley Global Advisors were
invited to assist the faiths in the development of 3iG. A real
partnership between the religious and the secular was begun.
After nearly four years of prepatory work spearheaded
by The Alliance of Religions and Conservation, today 3iG continues
to promote investment
that combines the potential for good return with beneficial social
and environmental consequences.
3iG's interaction between religious worlds and the worlds of
finance and the secular value systems and networks is an exciting
new model of collaboration. As a resource center, marketplace of
people, projects and ideas, and proactive brokerage, 3iG stands alone
in bringing together people of faith for investment in a better world.
As it looks to the future, 3iG plans to make an impact by:
- Helping faith investors to more effectively
invest their assets in ways that are consistent with the values
of the
faith and that bring
fiscally responsible returns. 3iG is thus building on and expanding
the faiths' experience and determination for advancing
a more just and environmentally friendly society.
- Providing access to a wide range of advisory and
investment services related to faith consistent investing.
